What’s in a name?
Taxi, Hackney and Cab are all descriptions of the same thing. These are all vehicles which are licensed to ply for business on our streets or at “Taxi Ranks”. Only licensed taxis are allowed to pick up passengers “on the street” without being pre-booked.
So next time you are outside a pub or club and you flag down a car, stop to think for a second, if the vehicle isn’t licensed as a taxi or hackney vehicle you could be putting yourself at risk.
1). If it’s not a licensed hackney carriage your jumping into, then it’s not insured, and neither are you! 2). It wont have a “Taxi Meter”. 3). It’s driver probably wont be police checked and approved. 4). It’s driver will not have had the regularity health checks, including eye sight tests. 5). It wont be subject to the stringent safety checks that genuine taxi’s have to pass twice a year.
Private Hire vehicles cannot stop and pick up fares on the street and must be pre-booked from the operators office.
